Expecta isn't a vitamin per se. It is, as you noted, a DHA supplement. Intended to be taken with pre-natal vitamins.

"Take Expecta LIPIL DHA Supplement in addition to your prenatal vitamin to help support your baby’s best start in life."

The average pre-natal vitamin doesn't have any DHA. Quite different, yes. And, as Expecta doesn't have anything but DHA, you wouldn't be overloading on anything.

Do not take both vitamins. The over the counter vitamins do not have DHA in them. The other difference is the level of folic acid. My doctor told me it was fine to take over the counter instead of prescription as long as I added a folic acid supplement. It sounds like you are already doing that. Jinx

You dont need a perscription vitamin... doctors make money on perscibing new medications. There are company reps in doctors offices all the time. Ive seen two just in the time ive been visiting my midwife these 7 months. They come in trying to encourage doctors to push their products in turn for a boat load of free samples and other gifts.

I wouldnt take them.

All the vitamins and folic acid your baby needed in large doses it took from your body before you knew you were pregnant. Folic acid is used in bulk during week 6-8, as the fetal pole (or spinal colomn and brain), is being formed. After that everything you get from you diet is technically enough. Prenatals are to provide your own body with enough to replenish its own reseves, since the baby will suck whatever it needs from your body whether you take it in or not. Even so much so that it will suck the calcium from your teeth.

I'd just stick with the over the counter prenatal. amosunknown
