What foods could i eat to get more iron in my diet?

Connie M asked:

My doctor said today that if you have a heavy period it may mean you need more iron. My period has been pretty heavy, so I’m thinking I should get more iron in. Other than supplements, what foods could i eat to get more iron in my diet?

beans and broccoli are high in iron. Broccoli is also high in calcium, which helps if you’ve been having heavy periods (it helps tremendously with PMS headaches). corduroy-fire-kills-7

Most meats have iron - particularly shellfish and liver - but also beef, shrimp, turkey and oily fish (salmon, sardines, tuna).

If you are vegetarian or prefer not to add more meat into your diet try:

*beans - pinto, black, lima, kidney, navy, lentils, split peas etc.,

*fortified breakfast cereals - Total, Special K, Smart Start, Oatmeal, Cream of Wheat etc

*fortified soy products - soy milk, yogurt, tofu, tempeh, etc.

*dark green vegetables - broccoli, kale, collard greens, spinach, romaine lettuce, etc.

    *nuts

*dried fruit - raisins, prunes, apricots, etc.

    *Molasses (blackstrap)

Another thing you can do is be sure to consume foods with a lot of vitamin C with iron-rich foods. Vitamin C helps iron absorption in the body. Gardenia
