Slim Fast diet for a teenager?

Fran M asked:

My son will be 13 in a few months. He is about 20 pounds overweight and is becoming very self conscious about his weight. I promised him I would help him lose the weight with diet and exercise. I myself need to lose about 20 pounds due to quitting smoking and being on anxiety meds. Would it be okay to have my son do the Slim Fast diet and supplement it with Weight Watchers or Lean Cuisine meals and his regular vitamins?

My friend was the fattest person when we was in year 7 way over average weight but now ( in year 10, age 14) he is almost at the average weight for his age. He has being doing rugby since he went into secondary school and it has really helped him to loose weight and he enoys it. I think fairly baggy clothes and an untucked shirt will make him look slightly skinnier but I wouldn’t recommend dieting because it’s hard to stick too and not very fun. All I know about dieting is that you have to gradually reduce the ammount of food u eat. hahahhahaha

At his age, it would be better to concentrate on him exercising all the time, every day. Walking to school, walking to the library, taking the stairs, taking up jogging, jump rope, etc. etc. Rather than using slim fast, get him eating fruits and veggies. the FDA says we;re supposed to have 5-8 servings of fruits and veggies A DAY!!!!!! Get him eating right and exercising all the time and he’ll never have a weight problem again!!!
On the other hand, teaching him to ‘diet’, won’t teach him how to eat right. Serene E

Of course it would be okay! But you want to be careful about the diet and you must follow it to actually lose weight. I am not sure how effective the Slim Fast diet is, or Weight Watchers or Lean Cuisine. I am not overweight, but there are these frozen meals called “Eating Right” … They are actually pretty tasty and give you the RIGHT portion of food for ONE meal. Another good thing for your son to do is to drink PLENTY of water, make sure he has fiber and iron in a diet. Fiber of course helps your metabolism. Does he mistake thirst for hunger? Most people do. As silly as that might sound, I know I have mistaken thirst for hunger. Instead of reaching for a snack or meal, I drink 1-2 glasses of water and the hunger goes away. Keeps me on schedule for when I am actually suppose to have a meal. I have tried Slim Fast before but the drinks/milkshakes taste so disgusting, I quit. Another diet you might want to look into is the South Beach Diet. I had a couple friends give it a try and it seemed to work. Oh and no more soda. At all. Water is a good thing. I don’t drink soda anymore, its either between juice, water or tea. And going to fast food, not a good thing. I suggest if you are on the run and need something to eat, grab a salad from a grocery store or sandwich from Starbucks etc. ALSO low sodium foods = good. Working out is important too! After school, have him go on a walk. Swimming on the weekends could be a cool and fun idea…but actually lane swimming. I use to be a swimmer and I burned calories like no tomorrow by lane swimming. But anyways, if this didn’t seem helpful, you should definitely consider talking to your son’s doctor and ask what kind of diet both of you could try to lose some weight. I wish you two all the luck! Remember…think smart when it comes to eating food and what you need! heavenlygift100

To loose those ugly tummy fat you must first and foremost focus on bringing your body fat percentage down to a 16 - 19% by way of dieting and doing cardio exercises. Without moderation, variety, and balance in the diet along with cardio workout; you can work your tummy til you are blue in the face and still be frustrated with ugly tummy fat.
First, focus on eating any and all types of fruits, vegetables (especially broccoli), nuts, whole grain pasta, high fiber cereal, fish, eggs, and lean meat. Try to avoid soda, drink plenty of water instead (good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces daily).
secondly, do the cardio exercises like walking, jogging, hiking, cycling, stair climbing, swimming, jump rope, and dance to music.
Follow these two closely guarded secrets to bring your body fat to between 16 -19% or lower. Then you can start focusing on your tummy workouts for a more define tummy. don
