Is it safe to take a B12 supplement on top of a multi-vitamin?

I am currently taking a men’s health multi-vitamin. Is it safe for me to take a mild (500mcg) B12 supplement on top of a multi-vitamin?

    It may be okay but I would first check the amount already in multivitamin so you aren’t over doing it. Many people will take an extra single vitamin pill like calcium or vitamin C along with their multivitamin when the amount in multivitamin isn’t quite enough.Your doctor could advise as to how much you should take for your purposes.

    yes. you can’t OD on b-12, any excess that your body won’t use will be peed out. been doing it for years.

    Typically, you can take quite a bit of B12 without any problems, especially if you are deficient. Some vitamin companies even make a B12 up to 5,000 mcg.

    If you are already taking a supplement with B12 in it why do you need to take another B12 supplement?

    Seems a little silly unless you have been diagnosed with some sort of sever B12 deficiency through blood work.

    Sure my mom does it everyday, b12 is a type of vitamin and multi vitamins have all sorts of vitamins in them so it is not like you are going to get to much of the same vitamin.

    B12’s always make me feel like i have more energy and help me with colds.

    B12 (cobalamin) works best in synergy with all the other B’s in the B complex of vitamins ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folic acid, choline, inositol, biotin, PABA etc.etc.etc……. to take one individually (as opposed to taking them as a whole complex) will only serve to put the balance of the others in the complex out of kilter and deficiency symptoms will occur in one or the other ……… take the B vitamins as a whole complex if you are going to supplement with them ….. the B complex of vitamins are essential for healthy immune, neural and digestive functioning and will bolster your system against stress, illness, nervous tension etc….. they’re a water soluble complex so any excess your body doesn’t need will simply be excreted in your urine……. if you are eating a diet rich in leafy and green vegies, organic nuts and seeds like almonds, sunflower seeds, wholegrains and cereals like brown rice, quinoa, legumes like lentils, green beans, fresh fruits, some lean meats and fishes …….. you will be amply supplied with the B complex of vitamins.

    Put one of the mulltivitamins in a glass of white vinegar ……. a supplement that is easy to assimilate will readily dissolve within 5 - 30 minutes ……… if it doesn’t throw it in the trash ……….. do the same with the B complex supplement ……. no point taking supplements that you are unable to digest.

    Yes, it’s safe to take with a multi so long as you take it as a whole complex.

    I feel minx gave a great answer and I concur..they do work synergistally and taking one or the wrong amounts of one can throw the rest out a sequence.

    To insure you get good b vitamins from food, take nutritional yeast (torula) with granular lecithin (great source of choline and inositol) maybe a tbs or so in a smoothie, applesauce, nut butter. also spirulina or chlorella powder in juice or water is a good source or a supplement like Dr Richard schulze’s superfood (herbdoc.com) or a comparable formula..foods are much better than supplements which can be made form things like petroleum, sewage sludge, unabsorbable oyster shells or rocks etc.

    These sources are super foods for the b vitamins and others..generally you can buy nutritional yeast, granular lecithin (both yellow) and spirulina or chlorella in the bulk in a health food coop or store.

    Please make sure you are taking 100% vegetarian vitamins, most people don’t know some vitamins are petroleum byproducts like vitamin e.
