All of the above contributors missed the point as to why we should supplement everyday with fish oil. Omega 3 fats are ESSENTIAL fatty acids. As such we need them in our diet to stay healthy.

The reason to supplement is that our diets have 20 to 50 times LESS omega 3 than what we need. This unbalance in the amounts of omega 3 creates the down payment for the diseases of modern age like, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and a host of disorders related to accelerated aging.

All body cells have a membrane. Each membrane is mainly made of essential fats, or essential fatty acids, Omega 6 and Omega 3. If the membrane has too much Omega 6 it becomes hard, viscous and there are problems for the food, energy and hormone transfer.

When Omega 3 is sufficient the membrane is thinner, less viscous, more elastic, less inflamed. Too much 3 Omega and the membrane “drips”. Too much Omega 6 and is clogged. It has been established that the appropriate Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio is near 1:1. In our modern life this ratio has changed to around 20:1, and some times up to 50:1. We eat too much Omega 6.

it's good if you supect heart problems, or have
high cholesterol.
I take 2000 mg a day
But a healthy, young guy like yourself doesn't need it.
But if your parents have cholesterol problems, or you
eat a lot of high fat/high cholesterol foods, you might
ask your doctor.
There are no side effects, but the supplements are not cheap.

Fish oil is harmless... as long as it is mercury free. I take it every day... it's no big deal... so no doctor.

As for the side effects... apparently Bekham takes fish oil.. and his wife don't like his fishy breathe... lol!

I take them at night with a meal. My wife wraps herself up in a flannelet jumpsuit with a zipper in the bottom (like a sleeping bag) .. so I've no reason these days to get close enough for her to complain about my breath!

No.

Read the article for a more in depth understanding.

"In addition to vitamins, we hear recommendations for all kinds of other diet supplements. There’s no good evidence for most of them. For fish oil, one of the most popular supplements, the evidence boils down to this:

(1) In patients who have had a heart attack, fish oil improves survival.
(2) It reduces triglycerides.
(3) In patients with high cholesterol levels it reduces the risk of coronary events but does not decrease mortality.
(4) It reduces blood pressure slightly.

Studies show fish oil may increase the risk of death and arrhythmias in patients with certain heart conditions, and high doses can worsen control of diabetes and can increase bleeding tendency.

The Medical Letter says,

Eating fatty fish may be beneficial for healthy people, but there is no evidence from prospective trials that fish oil supplements prevent cardiovascular disease in the general population.

I vote for leaving the fish oil in the fish."

My suggestion, eat fish if you want fish oil.
