I’m anemic and was told to take iron pills to supplement my diet, can you take too much iron?

Pyrette asked:

I take a multivitamin that says it provides me with 100% of my daily iron. But I’m still anemic. The iron pills say they provide you with 200% of your required daily iron. Is that too much if I take the multivitamin AND iron pills or is there such a thing as too much iron?

Yes you can take too much. Its really better to take in natural iron rich foods rather than chemical supllements. Look at the link below for some good iron rich foods.

Those multi vitamins do not work all that well…

If you take to much vitamins you will just discard them. Talk to your doctor we are not all built the same but I doubt if it will hurt you.

If you were given a prescription, you need to follow that. Also if you need to take iron pills, you should also drink a lot of water, since you will be having difficulty…. you know…. going. That or a stool softener, ask you doctor please since they know best.

It doesn’t sound like the amounts you’re taking will be harmful, but you should be advised that it IS possible to overdose on iron, and that it *can* be dangerous. See the link below for more info.
