They don't have to be crickets, but mealworms aren't very nutritious, so should only be offered for variety, not as a staple.  Consider other feeder insects--you may have to shop around.  Phoenix worms, silk worms, isopods, and tropical roaches are commonly cultured as feeders.  Dust crickets and mealworms with calcium if you do offer them, as they're high in phosphorus.
