You work for company that manufactures, markets,& distributes various products, including nutritional supplements to health food & nutrition stores. One of the company’s best -selling product is an herbal supplement called Rosalife.the company advertise that Rosalife “Achieves all the gains of estrogen hormone replacement therapy without any of the side effects.” One day a research assistant stops by your office with some troubling information. She tells you that while researching another product, she came across a recent study that suggests that Rosalife does not offer the benefits the company claims it does. You show this study to your supervisor, who says,”We’re not responsible for validating non FDA controlled products& nobody’s hurt anyway.” Indeed you know that this is not the case. What is your ethical responsibility?

First, the claim on nobody being “hurt” is untrue. If the study is correct and Rosalife does not do what it claims to do, then it’s being sold under false pretenses.

The claim that the company is not responsible for validating the FDA claims is also untrue. A company that receives FDA approval is required to bring forward such relevant data.

However… this is an herbal supplement. This is not FDA regulated (at least not now), so I’m not sure why the FDA claim.

Anyway, from an ethical perspective, it’s right to share this information with customers so that they can make informed choices. Legality has nothing to do with it.

you really dont have any control in this situation. If you had power you could test the product you sell or change the advertisements or claims or simply pull it from the shelves. Or if the claim that it is ineffective is actually false, then you could post proof to defend your product.
You onteh other hand are a research assistant so most likely have non of these power.

Ethically if you do not feel right representing such a company you can quit. You also could talk to your boss and ask if you can do additional research on the product so you can see if it in fact does work thus defending the company with proof. YOu could also request to see previous research results showing that it is effective.
If you still feel unethical about being a part of such a company you should quit.
