Health food supplements. What do Malaysians take?
©act⊍⊍a® asked:
Do they really have any benefits?
I have a whole load on my shelf - Vit C, multi-vits, gingko biloba, evening primrose oil, protein, fibre, collagen, Estime, lactobaccilus.. guess I don’t have to take regular meals anymore.
Edit: I’m the least disciplined person you can find and the lousiest at swallowing pills. I take Vit C, gingko and EPO daily and the rest, as and when I remember to. Oh, can you believe it, I found spirulina, psyllium and some kind of chilli juice in the fridge!

You don’t have to take them on ‘regular’ basis. As a matter of fact, all those nutrients you need are already found in your everyday food and even drinks!
Keep in mind that you should also consume a balanced diet. Its not only the additional supplements that make you live your life ‘healthier’ (it is something that salesmen always do to make you think that way), there are certain enzymes and other forms of healthy microorganisms not present when you consume these supplements (and some destroys them too, by the way, no matter how ‘organic’ they may be).
Since you’ve already got them, you might want to take them on alternate days or in some cases (if it is a strong supplement), you can use them as certain immune boosters by consuming them periodically or weekly basis.
Gingko Biloba is good for all time consumption, by the way. You can also consider collagen and lactobaccilus on regular basis, but it would be useless to take them on daily as you won’t feel the difference in your system eventually.
Lastly, NEVER use these supplements as an excuse to skip meals or substitute meals in any way unless you are a person who is regularly on a fast (eg. person who eats only once or twice a day).

For me, I consume garlic (raw and processed). Its one of the best supplement for me at the moment and I leave the Multi-Vits for periodical consumption

multi vitamin will do, the rest we can get it from our food - so need balanced diet. also regular exercise
always check USRDI percentage - you may exceed the requirements and waste your money. i.e. you take more than your body requires
for example your body only need 60mg of vit. C intake per day according to USRDI. so if you’re taking a 250mg vit C every day, just imagine how much you’re wasting your money
sometimes taking vitamins very much/exceed the limit might be harmful to your health
also never listen to /be careful of those direct selling dealers

I’d only take the vit C if I were you. Stick to a healthy balanced diet instead.

Collagen is crap - your stomach acid digests it. You might as well just eat meat or drink protein powder because the individual subunits making up collagen are also amino acids, which are found in meats. Vit C works if you really can’t eat more veg and fruits, but too much is a waste because your body passes excess vit C and vit B out. They are water soluble so they cannot be stored by the body.
If you are taking multi vits, stick to that and skip the C. It puts less stress on your wallet. Lactobacillus - if it isn’t live cultures, no point. For me, evening primrose oil did nothing for my period pains. I tried Omega fish oil from Pristin brand, and that worked better. Plus it’s cheaper than primrose oil. You just need 1000mg (a tablet) of fish oil a day, instead of having to take 3000mg primrose oil a day when u first start.

Forget about vitamin pills or any health food supplements.
Eat an apple or orange everyday and make sure you take regular meals daily.
