Confused about supplement consumption?
Andrew K asked:
I’ve never taken health supplements before. The store lady at GNC Health Store recommended a dozen products to me, and I am confused. I’ve heard from people that all I need is 1000mg of vitamin C, another supplement to detox my liver (green tea, milk thistle), and something else for the heart (fish oil). I’m confused. These products aren’t cheap. What would be the best supplements that a 30-year-old guy should consume on a daily basis (product names and where to get them would be very much appreciated)? Thanks.

GNC is a total ripoff. Check out and…u will save about half off the gnc prices. I am a 30 year old guy myself and I take one a day mens, vitamin c with flavonoids, a prostate supplement, l-glutamine, antioxidants, and try to get the rest of the stuff from vegetables.
There are two good programs that i follow and they have excellent diet/nutrition advice. Check them out if u want

What up, Andrew?
Okay, are you an avid workout guy or Just someone looking for a magic pill? If your an active guy and train with weights, then supplements can help. The only supplements that I recommend are glutamine, creatine, protein shakes and a multi-vitamin. Glutamine helps you recover faster, creatine will help you increase strength, protein shakes will help insure that you get all the protein you need (I recommend at least 0.75 grams of protein per lbs of lean muscle mass), and multi-vitamin is necessary because you are an athlete that needs it for optimal health and it will assist in recovery. pipman23

You should never completely trust information about a product that comes from the person who’s trying to sell you the product. In other words, the lady at GNC just wants to sell you as much stuff as she can.
If you have a decent diet and are in good health, you don’t need any supplements at all. One multivitamin a day contains all you need if you want to be sure. Generic is just as good as a name brand; vitamins are not well regulated so buying a name brand is no guarantee of quality.
Supplements often contain high levels of toxins such as lead, so the more you take the more dangerous it is. It’s also very possible to overdose on vitamins. Herbs are not safe simply because they’re “natural”; these too can contain contaminants and the chemicals in the herbs themselves can be dangerous in excess. They also interact with prescription medicines in sometimes hazardous and unpredictable ways.
Your liver can “detoxify” itself, unless it’s already been significantly damaged by disease. Some fish oil probably wouldn’t hurt you.
My suggestion (as someone who receives no kickbacks from the supplement industry) is to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and perhaps take one generic multivitamin a day. HollyHobby

Yep 1000mg of V.C is good but you need to break it up and take it in divided doses throughout the day. Same as a B-Complex. Are you from Australia? If so Blackmores Mega B Complex has roughly the right amounts of the B vitamins in it and also contains Choline and inositol which are quite rare. Blackmores Bio C 1000mg is good too.
Its almost impossible to get a good supplement in Australia.
Fish oil isn’t for the heart. The heart needs many many nutrients to keep it in good shape. You could take cod liver oil for vitamins A and D. Melrose cod liver oil does not replace the vitamins with synthetic A and D. And then you just need a multi vitamin and mineral supplement. They usually contain vitamins A and D so don’t take more than 25,000IU and 4,000Iu respectively. mz_dazed
