Is it legal/allowed to send nutritional supplements thru the mail from the US to France?

However, I am worried about French customs and am unfamiliar with what is allowed and legal. I have heard if she just writes that it is a “gift” on the customs form, it won’t be bothered, but I am concerned that they’ll scan it and see pill bottles or something and it will be confiscated.
Help! Can anyone help me out with guidelines or advice?
