Rob asked:

I was flipping through an issue of Parents magazine, and started reading an ad for seasonique birth control pill. I started reading the prescribing information page, and was amazed at some of the potential side effects. It’s not mild stuff like nausea or dizziness, but instead, side effects can include things like stroke, heart attack(!), blindness (ocular lesions), gallbladder disease, bleeding irregularities, as well as numerous other health problems…

I’m not making this up. See the prescribing info at http://www.seasonique.com for yourself.

Why are drugs like this allowed when they have so many potential LETHAL side effects?
A lot of sympathy for the devil in some of these answers…

I have discovered that pill bugs are in my house on the first floor. I have not noticed them on the second floor, but they are so many of them day after day in my living room, bathroom, etc. Are these insects ( or isopods as scientists refer to them) harmful to human being or to humans’ health.

I have heard of them being in gardens, but now they are in my house, is there something I am doing or not doing? how can I get rid of them?

HYPOTHETICALLY: if an obese person was starved, what nutritional supplements would be required for health?

Cathy T asked:

I’m not suggesting that locking up and starving an obese person is a good idea! But what nutrients are not stored in body fat, so that they would be required as supplements? Also would there be any other side effects of living entirely off one’s own body fat? Release of fat-soluble stored toxins maybe?

Sensible answers only please. And no, I’m not obese, not thinking of starving myself or even dieting at all. So I don’t need “the sensible way to lose weight is….” advice. Thank you!
Thank you for those who have given sensible answers. To those who haven’t bothered to read the question all the way through - please delete your answers cos I really resent giving you 2 points for writing something I specifically asked you NOT to write. And what on earth is “sliming the people”??????
So to avoid ketosis you would supplement with a small amount of carbohydrates? This is the type of thing I was getting at. How much, roughly? Anyone have any thoughts on the “other problems” section, or is it just me that watches House where they all seem to get worse when toxins are released from stored fat? lol
Yeah I realise starvation is not “healthy” but it was tricky to fit everything in the question. Hopefully the additional details explained better.

Might energy or herbal supplements cause a drug interaction with medication for AD-HD?

John S. asked:

We are going to check with the doctor first but that may take a while since he is booked for several weeks. In the interim, we are looking for basic guidance, hopefully from someone who has had experience with AD-HD medication or is a medical professional in the know.

This is for a 13 year old male who is active in sports and would like some nutritional supplements, specifically to boost energy / build strength. He has a good diet and takes a good general multivitamin supplement. We know about increasing Vitamin B in the diet. But there are other herbals and amino acids one can choose in addition to regular vitamins and minerals to help boost energy, improve strength, build lean muscle, etc.

In particular, we are looking at legal anabolic activators we have used successfully in the past and which teens have used safely in their sports nutrition. One anabolic activator we are looking at does include creatine, royal jelly, chromium, yohimbe, kola nut, and various amino acids.

But this was outside the inclusion of AD-HD medication, and there are several AD-HD drugs doctors can choose from beyond Ritalin which include:

* Adderol
* Adderol XR
* Focalin
* Concerta
* Stratera
* Dexedrine
* Metadate ER
* Metadate CD

So as a general rule, are legal anabolic activators and/or energy supplements from the nutrition store (e.g. GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe) safe to use with teens if they are taking AD-HD medication?

As I began this question with “We are going to ask the doctor”, I’m not looking for a response, “Ask your doctor.” We are simply making a decision as to HOW MUCH anabolic activator to order (10 days shipping time) because if it is safe for a teen on AD-HD medication, we’ll order more. If not, we’ll order less and still put it to good use as there is more than one athlete in this household.

I’m looking for BASIC guidance, not a prescription or a diagnosis.
