Lisa asked:

I’m gone to school everyday for about 4 or 5 hours. Sometimes it’s longer than that. Right now I’m feeding them only Wellness canned food everyday (each get more than 6 oz of canned food). Is it a good idea to leave out some dry food when I’m gone so they can snack on it? Or will it be better for their health to stick to the Wellness canned food? Of course their main diet will be the canned food. Btw my cats will not even touch Wellness dry food. They love EVO dry food so much that it’s like a treat for them, they eat it within literally seconds but the store is 30 miles away from me. I’m trying to choose from Petsmart and Petco. I’m going to choose a somewhat good quality dry food like Halo, Organix, Blue Buffalo or Natural Balance.

Can someone recommend a good “wet” food to supplement our cats’ dry kibble?

I’d like to supplement our cats’ dry kibble with a preservative-free can food. No Science Diet, Iam’s, Friskies, 9 Lives, etc please. Preferably something all-natural with nothing nasty added.
Cats’ ages range from 2 to 13.

Hi, I have a friend who feeds his cat those dry biscuit things (Whiskas) and only gives his cat around one pouch of cat food per day. I reckon this is not a healthy diet but he insists it is. I would appreciate other opinions. I don’t think this cat supplements it’s diet in any way with garden birds / mice etc.

Is it necessary to use a dry food to get a healthy diet for cats ?

Diet i.e. a large % of the cats diet consists of steamed chicken complemented with either tuna, pilchards or sardines, occasional milk and unfortunately up until now Purina 1 total nutrition chicken and rice formula (dry compliment)? In your opinion what is the best dry supplements on the market? On determining what is the best can this be offset with additional wet variations which will give the same desired dietary results?

Unpredictable Irresistible Mutts asked:

I want my cat to live as long as possible, and I’d like to know of any good supplements to keep my cat healthy. She’s almost 7 years old, on the small side, and is a completely indoor cat. She’s extremely healthy, robust, and playful. I feed her Blue Buffalo Spa Selects, but I may be switching her to a better food.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you!
I don’t mean medicine, I mean holistic food supplements, like vitamins.

I have a 9 pound 1 1/2 year old female. I took her to the vet about 6 months ago and he said she was a bit overweight. She both gains and loses weight really easily. Right now she looks a little chubby, would it be good to feed her the diet supplement, is it still as healthy as the regular?

Opinions on FortiFlora nutritional supplement by Purina?

nope asked:

When I adopted a new kitten recently, I took him to the vet because he had a host of issues (parasites, diarrhea). The vet gave me FortiFlora made by Purina to help with the kitten’s bowel movements. After a few days, it did clear up, and the vet advised me that cats “do better” when on this supplement.

My concern is, this vet seems to know just as much about feline nutrition as any other… he predictably recommended Science Diet strongly, and I know that Purina doesn’t make food that’s actually nutritious, either. So my concern is, is their supplement any good? I was thinking of just giving him the rest of the box (they are packs of powder that you just pour over food once a day) because at $30 for a box of 30, they are kind of pricey.

I have a 14 year old male cat. He has become very picky lately as to what he will eat. He did have urinary problems when he was younger, but has not had any issues in years. I usually feed him Iams. I also give him a few cans of the new fancy feast each week. He really likes the fancy feast as long as it doesn’t contain fish.

My problem is that it is far too expensive for me to feed him the fancy feast alone and I don’t want to buy him cheap food with less nutrition. He has stopped eating the Iams. I think that he either is holding out for the wet food, or the hard food may be difficult for him to chew.

It looks like homemade food may be an excellent option for me, but I want to be certain to make it properly. Should I add a supplement? Should I add veggies? If so, what kind.

I can feed myself good food for as much as a case of store bought cat food cost, so I think I can give him a better meal than pre-packaged food. Any help will be appreciated.

Merlin is 12 years old. He has already been scheduled for surgery, later this month, to removed the large tumor (which is on his hind leg), but the results from biopsy won’t be back until May 1st.

In general, he has experienced good health, and is active, though chubby (12.8 pounds). He lives with two female cats, one older and one much younger. They all eat a high quality dry food, for “sensetive skin,” and are much-loved indoor cats.

I know the usual answers (chemotherapy, vet-precribed medication), but was hoping that pet lovers might have some other ideas, foods or supplements he could injest, homeopathic remedies, medical therapies that have worked for pets you know, specific medications that worked wonders for your “baby,” etc.

Andrea C asked:

I currently have two week old kittens whose mom is with them. She was a stray and seems to be in much better health than when she was found. She was found right before she delivered four babies. Due to her health she has never produced enough milk for them. I began to suppliment feed the babies. My concern is will this cause the mom cat’s milk to dry out. I do not feed them all the time, but about three times a day and two refuse to accept milk from me. I am not sure how to get them to accept it so they can beging to gain weight. Please help with any advice and I appriciate no slams please. I am planning on having all of them checked out by a vet as soon as I can get the money together to ensure their health is up to par.
Thanks a million!
Andrea
Suppliment: To help her by feeding the kittens a milk replacement perodically giving her a chance to nurse them as well.
