Can anyone recommend a book/web site that informs on use of vitamins/supplements for optimum health?

health supplements
sheila asked:

I have read that because of poor quality of food and air these days we are better off taking vitamin and food supplements. How do you chose what to take, how do you know how they react with each other or cancel each other out, etc. It seems like a minefield - and I expect taking too many supplements is worse than taking none.
There are so many good answers here for me to follow up, thank you all for your advice.

I am fairly healthy, but get run-down every so often and feel my body is lacking something, I’m catching colds etc much more frequently than ever before.

You cant beat a variety of foods to get all you need in vitamins/minerals…..as your body doesnt always absorb the suppliments you take…….if you do have to take them take them at night so your body can do the most good with them :)

Jean Carper has a good website. Supplements are helpful but should not replace good eating habits

In 1993 a research team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, reported the results of a 13-year study on 10,758 Americans which failed to find any mortality benefits from vitamin and mineral supplements. The study found that even though supplement users smoke and drink less than non-users, eat more fruits and vegetables than non-users, and are more affluent than non-users, they didn’t live any longer than non-users. The study also found no benefit from taking vitamin and mineral supplements for smokers, heavy drinkers, or those which chronic diseases. In May 2006, a committee of physicians impaneled by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that little information exists as to whether people should take supplements. The previous March the NIH noted that research suggests that vitamins and other supplements may do more harm than good, and that antioxidants are of little use.

The company I’m associated with has proven to be of the highest integrity and the quality of their products are unsurpassed. I’ve used them for years and have complete confidence in them and this is coming from someone who never took any type of supplements or vitamins for years because I simply didn’t trust what they advertised until I came across this company. So I can completely relate to your question. I’ve had nothing but wonderful results as has others that I’ve recommended them to. They are celebrating their 50 year anniversary this month.

Where the best of science and nature work together.

Since this would probably be considered advertising, if you are interested in my website, please feel free to contact me.

    Best Wishes and good health.

I would be wary of any website that promotes certain supplements with their own brand name.

Adelle Davis is a nutritionist who was far ahead of her time. Many of her assertions that were once dismissed have recently been validated. Try googling her; I also highly recommend one of her books, “Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit.” She points out - among other things - that the Minimum Daily Requirement or Recommended Daily Allowance is merely the minimum amount to prevent disease…not the amount to promote maximum glowing health. She makes very specific recommendations with plenty of rationale.

Lifescrypt where you can get an analysis for the actual vitamins and minerals you need, always take your vitamins with food, certain vitamins cannot be taken together, others work in synergy (together).Google for site.

I can give you that advice free of charge here Simply follow the instructions and I will get some advice to you. Please bear in mind that if you are healthy then there is most probably no deficiency per say but there are measures you can take in your diet to ensure maximum nutrient up take.
This is not a solicitation but a genuine offer of free help.
Yahoo has accused me of this in the past because I offer to help people for free and I want to point out clearly that there is no profit for me in this offer of help, merely the satisfaction of helping another in need.
    Have a great day.

The best book I know of and use like my “bible” is Prescription for Nutritional Healing by James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C. I like the 2nd edition best. They carry it at GNC, Vitamin World, and any major bookstore. I believe it runs about $20.00 to $25.00. Couldn’t live without it!
